Phantomeres

Single: Phantomere | Plural: Phantomeres
Young: Wisp
Group: Haunting
Phantomeres are a large avian creature most associated with Cíntwe. They are the protectors of Windsong Mountain, where the guardian dwells upon.
The Phantomeres, although protectors of the mountain and somewhat eerie in appearance, are rather docile. They are exclusively found on the island of Xaaida, and though most live on the mountain, some sparse populations have spread around the base. Since their reappearance upon the mountain, some Phantomeres have become bonded to the residents of Xaaida. Their docile and fiercely loyal nature has led to them being powerful companions.

Diet

Phantomeres are carnivores, often feeding on Csirkatrice, Groinks, and other medium sized creatures. They have also been seen to grab large fish, if they were to live close to the ocean or larger rivers. They are solitary, and silent hunters, swooping down from above to snatch their prey and taking off with it.

Breeding

Phantomeres will court in the months of December through January, and then settle with a single partner. This pair will then build their nest in October and the female lays between 2-7 eggs. The two parents take turns hunting and providing food for their wisps.
During the months of courting, male Phantomeres will grow a pair of long secondary feathers near the base of their wings. These feathers, along with the mist from their horns, are what the male uses to attempt to persuade the female. This is accompanied with hoots and soft whistles, akin to the noises of the guardian.

Abilities

Phantomeres are silent fliers with high stamina, allowing them to stalk the skies for long periods of time. They are easily able to carry a rider on their backs and can carry more weight than expected, allowing transport of goods to hard to reach locations. This is due to the glands on their necks, mana organs that pull in wind mana to help the birds carry weights they normally wouldn’t be able to. Combined with their ability to hover in the air on low drafts, this makes Phantomeres efficient at transport and hunting.
On top of their sharp claws and beaks, Phantomeres can let out a loud shriek that causes headaches and mild disorientation.

Bonding

If you can bond with a Phantomere, you gain a lifelong loyal companion. Phantomeres are great for travel, able to fly long distances. They also are able to help with deliveries. Though they cannot carry large amounts of weight, they are perfectly capable of transporting supplies such as food or trade goods. Additionally, as companions, they are almost able to communicate their emotions, and sometimes even images if the bond is strong enough. This seems to be a trait from their telepathic communication with Cíntwe.

Variations in Appearance

Phantomeres always have a few key features:
  • Four eyes, with the bottom pair being the larger of the two
  • Horns that attach to a marking outlining their face
  • Two pairs of round glands on their necks
  • A long tufted tail that sits under their tail feathers and is accented with an “eye”
Even as babies, these features remain, though their tails are slightly shorter.
Phantomeres come in a variety of cool toned blues and purples. They always have three colors that make up their base and markings. These colors must be color picked from the palettes below.

Darker Markings

The color of their glands and tail eye, and by extension, the smoke from their horns, comes in a wide range of colors. They may be any neon or pastel color following standard color rules, with the value looking at the HSV being no less than 90%. On the other hand, their eyes, feet, beak, horns, and markings outlining their face are always a dark grey, color-picked from these two options.

Wisps have very few markings, only those found on their wings and tail as shown in their image. Their markings outlining their face take the color of their darkest markings, like those spotting their wings. They must feature all of the markings depicted in their example image on this guide.
Adult Phantomeres always have the markings pictured here, including the swirls and the stripes.
