Could you imagine what Koma saw before him?
Having been preparing for their demise only mere minutes ago whilst the siren's tail curled tighter and tighter around his throat. Feeling their vision begin to blur and mind as cloudy as the stormy skies above. So undeniably sure that this was it, this was the end for him, destined to die having failed both Scout and the island itself without even a merciful embrace to shoulder the burden of death. Koma was going to slip away into the snowy chaos struggling and heaving as the few breaths of cold air they could muster stung his throat, that arm grasping desperately for the bow wilting as it lost every ounce of power it had whilst another seemed to grasp for it in turn.
Watching the slim brown shape as it was taken away from them, far far away to where his quiver had spilt not so long ago; arrows cast across the floor with a dark paw feverishly gathering the fistful that laid there. Their bow, gone; as gone as he felt he was. Was enough encouragement to quietly dip their head into the freezing white powder of the mountain, fuzzy shapes of fighting finley and far-off peaks dotting his fleeting vision. Koma was ready to give up there and then, their weapon was out of reach, he had no bond to call upon for aid, and Scout was as far as he knew still tending to Temper's seemingly grievous wounds; there was no point to continue fighting the siren and its serpentine wiles.
This was it.
...
Or, was it?
The pressure around their throat had relaxed? Sucking in a spluttering gasp of air only to be followed by hacking coughs, gods he could feel the saliva they sprayed across the floor before feebly pushing himself up. Trembling throughout every fibre of their body just to gaze at the sight that laid before him, even though it took a minute for their vision to focus he knew the dark pelted nyulop who stood there gripping their bow; though if he wasn't out of it and on the floor Koma would've made to mention that their form was a tad off for letting loose arrows... Oh well, they could tell her later, if they made it out of this and all.
It was Scout. Glaring at the siren with a wild look in her eyes and an arm drawn back with arrow aimed and at the ready, the look of someone who felt like they were ready to lose everything for the sake of defeating this horrid creature, she was letting them fly loose and fast with no remorse. Was she even aware that Koma was coming back around, could she even hear his groaning through that ravaged ear of hers let alone the blood that pounded within them? Bounding across the battlefield in a crazed haze of piercing arrows and missed shots, Scout honestly couldn't give a shit if she missed so long as it got that palid freak's attention away from her expedition mate's supposed corpse; she refused to fail him even if it cost her very life. It was her own personal life-or-death, a suicide mission if you wanted to go so far as that.
Roaring with anguish and pain regardless of whether she still had arrows in hand, this beast dared to take everything from her. Shot after shot, arrow after arrow, piercing blue eyes strained from stress and snow yet still all the more focused on courting it her way in her worn purple jacket. It was enough of a spectacle to catch the eyes of others in the fight, losing focus, focus going, gazes all towards the flying flurry that was this emotionally wrecked unlucky nyulop tearing up the snow with her movements. Nobody was even prepared for the way she stared at her palms after she fired her final arrow, casting the bow aside quickly and carelessly {she can get Koma a new one, probably?} with her heavy and heaving breaths visible in the air itself. What else was there for her to use? Her partner's bow was useless without arrows left, it was too risky to turn tail to grab more now that the grey slithering monster had its sights set on her and her alone...
Then, as Koma stared bewildered from his snowy spot, it seemed to hit her. Or more rather the sting of the cold air that collided with her bared fangs as her chest heaved and ached, gasping for air and the idea that came from it. Glaring at the dark claws that lined her fingertips before turning her sight back to the palid horror and its taunting blue glow, almost letting out a strained laugh if not a struggling cry that ripped its way through her already shot vocal chords. The answer was right there in her arsenal already, lowering to her haunches with hackles raised and a last ditch effort burning in her veins as those paws felt the cold snow against her palms; a minute of calm as the snowflakes tickled her snout and brushed her whiskers like none of this was even happening. Thinking back to every snapshot of her life so far; the day she bonded with Temper, when she decided to take a younger Koma under her wing as he whimpered at her loud and boisterous nature, sparring with Teles in the snow-dusted forests a tail's length from the village as a child with the eager spark to protect what she loved, the proud look in the eyes of the elders as she grew old enough to hold her very first blade...
Walking up the mountain with Koma, getting lost, getting injured, making it here...
It all led up, to this.
Taking in a deep breath, feeling the world around her; before the rush of adrenaline hit her entire nervous system.
Leaping forward on all fours with the fury of all who lost in order to get her here, ripping her final arrow out of its resting place in the ground after having missed its mark with the intent to ensure it'll strike true again. Rapidly approaching the almighty grey beast with an ear-splitting scream of rage and distress only to lunge at it's side, digging the tip of the arrow into its flesh with claws piercing into the other side for sure footing. Scrambling up its slim serpentine frame in a bloodythirsty haze as the blood dripped down staining ghostly silver into deep red, she could barely even give a shit about the cheering from onlookers; it wasn't important and she couldn't hear it above the roaring blood within her ears as she could hear her heart pound with every thrust of the arrow and grip of her claws. Staring blankly for a moment at its nape once she clawed her way up its body, the world felt numb to her in this moment; the dizzying heights and the piercing shriek barely even paid attention to as she drew back her lips in a snarl.
This was it. Her swan song.
Fangs sinking into flesh as she tightened her grip on the siren, biting down as hard as she could with the intent of drawing blood if not dragging a chunk out with her very teeth. What else mattered but that, ripping its neck up with her maw like a rabid beast of her own making. Who cared how Koma sat there frozen in awe and fear at the deep purple furball lodged into the crook of the siren's neck as it howled and shrieked in pain, she was making her god damn mark on this battle and if she died then so fucking be it.
Claws scoring its body and teeth piercing like needles, small yet painful beyond compare for the almighty palid serpent. A glimmer of a fighting chance shining in her deadset eyes, the sort that the weary finley who dotted the mountain's peak could root for as a raspy crow of "COME ON SCOUT!" came from the floor below; it was Koma propping himself up with the aid of some other battler. Their friend's braizen bites lighting some sort of fire within him, a frightening sight yes but somehow empowering nonetheless.
...It wasn't long till the entire mountain was roaring her name, fists raised as it frantically swung its entire body in attempts to cast her off; the blasted bloody tick she was.
Koma was proud of her.
