It had caught in the corner of Mae’s eye, a blur of rich browns and vibrant hues of blues and green, but unmistakable to any New Prospero native. A newfound wave of determination and pride had even washed over her almost the second she witnessed it. Literally giving her the ability to easily catch the criminal that had previously given her a run for her money. However, once the infamous finley had been detained, Mae could not find any trace of the creature anywhere. She had believed the birds to be critically endangered, but if pockets of them had made their way this far, perhaps there were more than she realized. Without more substantial proof of their existence in Whistler Crest, Tobias was a bit reluctant to help the sheriff. But if her transformation wasn’t proof enough–enough to give Tobias quite the shock–then it was enough to at least hear Mae out on her claims.
Tobias: Hello Creature Researchers! Me and the Sheriff have a bit of an unusual task for you today. It seems as if there are sightings of a rare bird native to New Prospero called a Splitstreaker. These birds are equipped to handle the desert landscape, so to see some this far out is a bit...unorthodox.
Mae: "Unorthodox" er not I know what I saw. Splitstreakers are very important to New Prospero folk. They’re a symbol of our resilience n’ strength. But it is strange to see them so far eastward.... All the more reason to go figurin out how they’ got ere’ n the first place.’
Mae: Listen here researchers. These birds...well they're very special. Almost lost the whole lot of em to some terrible finley who wanted to hurt the people of my hometown, by hurtn' a creature with a lot a respect among the New Prosperos folk.…If ya'll do this for me you'll have my eternal thanks. Also-whatever Tobias is payn’ yall, I’ll make sure he doubles it after completing this fer me!
Tobias: W-wait just a minute Miss Mae! You can’t go around making promises like that!
Tobias: Searching for signs of habitation is a good enough start for you researchers. Finding anything from tracks to feathers would be invaluable evidence! Come back to me with any signs you find! We can discuss, ahem, further payment after.
